Course & Tutorial Registration in TUMonline

Almost every question we get in the first two weeks is about TUMonline. Here is how course, exercise and tutorial registration works, and what the status symbols in your semester plan actually mean.

Student-to-student info. This guide was built from the experiences of fellow students to make your start easier. Please note that binding information can only come from the official statements of the faculty of TUM School of Management.

How registration works

Log in to TUMonline, go to Studies & Courses, then My Studies. There you see your credits, your average grade and all course information.

Open the Semester Plan at the top. It shows the recommended schedule and the mandatory courses for your semester. Always register from the semester plan rather than through the general course search, that way you cannot accidentally sign up for a course from another programme.

Exercises and tutorials often have separate registration slots with limited capacity and their own opening time. Registering for the lecture does not register you for the tutorial.

Common pitfalls

Two courses overlapping in your schedule is usually not an error: half-semester courses such as Business Ethics and Entrepreneurship share a slot with another course.

A green dot means registration is open or you are registered, a red triangle means the registration period has not started or is already closed. Both are explained in detail below.

+How do you sign up for the courses?

1. Log in to TUMonline → go to Studies & Courses → My Studies. Here you can see your credits, average grade, and course info.

2. Click on the Semester Plan (top center). This shows the recommended schedule and required courses for each semester.

3. Select a course from the plan and register directly through the detail page. This ensures you don’t sign up for the wrong course.

1. To register for exams, you can either go back to My Studies → Exams / Exam Registration and complete your exam sign-up. Or you can simply click on the course you want to register for. The click on the course marked with a red triangle to register for the lectures and for the exam click the course marked with the green circle.

+How do I register for tutorials, e.g. for Operations Research and Decision Analysis?

For starters, you only need to register for the lectures themselves; Normally information regarding the tutorials, exercises etc will be shared in the first lectures.

+There are multiple exercise slots. How should I select one?

Content wise they are the same; The lecturers (and of course the times) are quite different. Feel free to try out different slots in the first few weeks to find out what works best for you; Registration is normally not necessary.

+Why is one lectures marked with a green dot and the other with a red triangle?

The green one is for the exam and the red one is for the lectures and exercises.

+I see two overlapping courses on my schedule. Why is this?

If you have followed the recommended timetable, this should not be an issue.

However, exercises and tutorials might be offered at times when other lectures are taking place.

If you wish to attend the lecture, then simply reregister for a different group or just go to another one!

+Why can’t I see/register for business ethics yet?

Because the course starts in December. Until then you have Foundations of Entrepreneurial Business.

+For economics there are two lectures we can choose from Is it possible to change the group during the semester or not?

Of course. It should be noted that registration is usually just a formality. It doesn't matter at all if you simply come to another session (this also applies to the exercises and tutorials). What can happen, and why there is a limit, is that the room may be full. However, since some people don't attend the lectures, exercises, and tutorials throughout the semester, it should work out. You can also officially deregister and re-register for the new group if you want; you can do that too, of course.

+Can I not take/take extra courses this semester?

That is entirely up to you, at TUM you can take whatever courses and as many courses you like. Keep in mind, however, that your GOPs should ALWAYS have priority, as you will be exmatriculated if you do not pass 3 of the 4 after your 2nd semester.

+Are there special course requirements to select the Medicine specialization?

Nope. Just take the courses as recommended in the “template timetable” and pass your GOPs. Don’t fail them!!!

+How can I find where my room is?

https://nav.tum.de/

If you want to check the location of a room, use the TUM Roomfinder/NavigaTum, link above.

You can also look up rooms in Garching there.
